The NBTC was established under the Act on the Organization to Assign Radio Frequency and to Regulate the Broadcasting and Telecommunication Services B.E. 2553 (2010).
 
The NBTC is the independent state Broadcasting and telecommunications regulator. Its duties and responsibilities are to regulate all broadcasting and telecommunication services in the country through formulating a master plan on broadcasting and telecommunications activities. It is also works on setting criteria and categories of broadcasting and telecommunication services, permitting and regulating the use of spectrum broadcasting and telecommunication services, and granting licenses to the broadcasting and telecommunication operators.
