Summary
RUT230 units used in automated city lighting project.
Customer profile
NS Koncept is a Serbian company that deals in automation of industrial and thermal processes. They constantly monitor the latest trends and technology, so they can offer customers high quality service, while preserving the environment.
Challenge
On the field, the PLC calculates the time for turning lights ON or OFF (sunset and sunrise) based on GPS coordinates and real time clock. In the head office there is a server with SCADA software which collects data, alarms, makes SMS alarm reporting. Each cabinet can be controlled from SCADA, so the challenge is finding a way to communicate between the SCADA application and the PLCs.
Solution & Benefits
The best solution is to use RUT230 routers as gateways between SCADA and the PLCs, making effective use of the Modbus TCP protocol for control and an L2TP VPN tunnel for remote access.
Some of the cabinets are located in poor signal condition areas. Since RUT230 are compatible with many external antennas, the client easily solves the issue by attaching antennas with longer cables and placing them at better positions. Furthermore, the communication does not generate that much network traffic, therefore eliminating the need for 4G and reducing the cost by using a 3G router.
