Revision as of 14:38, 5 January 2022

As of February 22nd, 2022, AT&T, due to ongoing network improvement and 5G service expansion, will phase out its 3G network. This article will describe what steps are necessary to prepare for upcoming changes.

What actions do I need to take?

While AT&T will shut down its 3G network, Teltonika Networks devices will still work with other 3G service providers. There will be a required firmware upgrade to make sure that 4G/LTE Category 1, 3 and 4 devices in the U.S could still connect to 4G even after the scheduled sunset.

You must upgrade the affected devices (table below) to the latest firmware before February 22nd, 2022. Failing to execute the following action will leave your devices unable to use mobile data connection.

If your device is already on the higher Modem firmware than in the table, but your Teltonika Networks device's firmware isn't the one that is represented above - you don't need to take any actions, device will work as usual

How to update the firmware of Teltonika Networks Device

Following actions must be taken manually:

  1. Download corresponding firmware for your device from the table above.
  2. In the WebUI, navigate to System > Firmware and upload the downloaded firmware.
  3. Once uploaded - initiate the upgrade/update process and give your device some time to finish it.

Once device's firmware is updated

Following actions will be performed automatically:

  1. Fetching new LTE Modem firmware (20-30MB size) to Teltonika Networks device. Firmware is being fetched from Teltonika's cloud and requires Mobile Data connection to be successful.
  2. Subsequent automatic update of LTE Modem firmware on your Teltonika device.

IMPORTANT: when using Legacy firmware (older than RUTOS v07.xx.xx) this process works only via Mobile Data Connection, i.e. router must use Mobile WAN as opposed to Wired or Wifi WAN.

WebUI banner will indicate if the LTE Modem upgrade is still in progress or is finished.

If the LTE Modem upgrade is complete, you will get following message:

Your device is now back to usual functionality!

What do I need to know about this firmware update?

  • LTE Modem firmware flashing duration is around 15-30 minutes
  • Do not turn off the device
  • During LTE Modem firmware flash normal functionality of the Teltonika Networks device will be impaired:
    • No Mobile Data connection, SMS, call functions;
    • Possible WebUI issues;
  • If update has failed, LTE Modem firmware download and reflash procedure will start again at next power cycle for RUTOS, and on network / modem restart for Legacy firmware devices.
