Hardware installation

Setting up Calyx with Raspberry Pi

Device Startup

Use only Raspberry Pi 4 or 5 for device setup you can find all steps in details on the official getting started with your Raspberry Pi guide.
Insert a microSD card with Raspberry Pi OS installed using Raspberry Pi Imager.
Connect the power supply, display, keyboard, and mouse or prepare for SSH access.
Boot the Raspberry Pi and complete the initial system setup, including language, Wi-Fi, and updates.
Power off the Raspberry Pi and prepare it for Calyx HAT+ installation.
Mount the Calyx on to your Raspberry Pi according to the Hardware installation instructions.
Power on the Raspberry Pi and proceed with steps below.

Calyx 4G / EBD021 and Calyx 5G / EBD050

The Calyx EBD021 normally exposes only an Ethernet interface (e.g., eth0) using RNDIS/ECM, not a GSM/WWAN modem. In this mode, it cannot be managed by ModemManager and provides no AT-command access.

If USB-serial drivers are loaded manually, the device creates TTY ports that allow AT-command control via tools like microcom. Regardless of driver configuration, all data connectivity is always delivered through the Ethernet interface, not a traditional USB modem interface.

Load necessary USB serial drivers

sudo modprobe usbserial
sudo modprobe option

Open modem terminal interface

sudo microcom -p /dev/ttyUSB2

Configure and test the modem using AT commands

Calyx 5G Red Cap / EBD070

1. Disconnect modem

Before starting physically unplug the modem from the Raspberry Pi before installing the driver.

2. Install modem driver

Download File:EBD070-driver-1.0.zip.
Ensure the Raspberry Pi has an active internet connection.
Update package lists:

sudo apt-get update

Install driver package:

sudo apt-get install -y -f ./ebd070-driver-1.0.deb

Restart ModemManager:

sudo systemctl restart ModemManager

3. Reconnect modem

Reconnect the modem to the Raspberry Pi – ModemManager should now detect it and create /dev/ttyUSB interfaces.

4. Load and register USB serial drivers

If the modem is not detected automatically, load the drivers and register its USB IDs manually:

sudo modprobe usbserial
sudo modprobe option

2. Open modem terminal interface

Operating conditions

Operating temperature: -40° to +75° Celsius
Humidity should be in the range of 10% to 90% (non-condensing). Only use the device in dry environments.
